Area of Science:

  • Endodontics
  • Dental Materials Science

Background:

  • Endodontic treatment requires careful shaping and disinfection of root canals.
  • Preservation of pericervical dentin is vital for maintaining tooth structure integrity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the pericervical dentin wear caused by three reciprocating endodontic systems: WaveOne Gold, One Reci, and Reciproc Blue.

Main Methods:

  • An in vitro study utilized 30 single-rooted premolars divided into three groups.
  • Tomographic evaluations measured dentin wear at 4 mm from the cemento-enamel junction before and after instrumentation.
  • Statistical analysis included the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's post-hoc tests (p<0.05).

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant difference in wear was observed on the distal surfaces (p=0.005).
  • One Reci exhibited the least wear (0.05±0.02mm) compared to WaveOne Gold (0.21±0.21mm).
  • No significant differences in wear were found on mesial, buccal, or palatal surfaces.

Conclusions:

  • One Reci is the most conservative system for pericervical dentin preservation among the tested systems.
  • The selection of reciprocating endodontic systems can significantly influence the preservation of dental structure.
