Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • The increasing prevalence of backyard chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) flocks in urban and suburban US areas necessitates updated diagnostic tools.
  • Plasma protein electrophoresis (PPE) is a standard diagnostic method, but specific reference intervals (RIs) for chickens in northern Colorado were lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish reference intervals (RIs) for plasma protein electrophoresis (PPE) in adult, non-molting backyard chicken flocks in northern Colorado.
  • To provide essential data for accurate veterinary diagnostics in this growing population.

Main Methods:

  • Collected plasma samples from 120 healthy adult chickens across 7 flocks in northern Colorado.
  • Utilized agarose gel electrophoresis and a biuret total protein assay for protein fractionation.
  • Generated RIs for PPE fractions and performed sex-based partitioning according to established guidelines.

Main Results:

  • Established comprehensive RIs for all birds and after sex partitioning.
  • Identified statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) between sexes for most electrophoretic fractions, supporting sex-based RIs.
  • Provided specific RIs for albumin, alpha-1, alpha-2, beta-1, beta-2, gamma globulins, and the albumin:globulin ratio.

Conclusions:

  • Successfully generated reference intervals for plasma protein electrophoresis in backyard chickens in northern Colorado.
  • The availability of these RIs will enhance the diagnostic accuracy for avian health practitioners.
  • Sex-specific RIs are recommended due to observed significant differences between hens and roosters.
