Fractures: Bone Repair

5.0K
Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Traumatology
  • Skeletal biomechanics

Background:

  • Scapular body fractures are uncommon, often treated nonoperatively.
  • Significant displacement may necessitate surgery for optimal shoulder function.
  • A standardized approach for selecting surgical methods based on fracture morphology is lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively evaluate surgical treatment and outcomes for scapular body fractures.
  • To validate a method for selecting surgical approaches based on fracture patterns.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series of 10 patients (2013-2024) with scapular body fractures.
  • Exclusion of glenoid fossa, acromion, or coracoid fractures.
  • Surgical indications: glenopolar angle <22°, coronal angulation >45°, or lateral border offset ≥20 mm.
  • Four surgical approaches used: Brodsky, double incision, modified Judet, and classical Judet.

Main Results:

  • Ten patients underwent surgical fixation, primarily due to traffic accidents.
  • Brodsky approach was most common (n=6).
  • Postoperative imaging showed improved alignment; no infections or nonunions.
  • Favorable range of motion and low pain scores reported.

Conclusions:

  • Surgical treatment of scapular body fractures yielded satisfactory reduction and functional prognosis.
  • The proposed surgical approach selection method is a rational strategy.
  • Optimized reduction quality and invasiveness were achieved with minimal complications.
