Background:

Workplace accidents and injuries pose significant risks, particularly in high-risk industries like healthcare.
While safety climate is a known factor, the influence of individual differences on workplace safety requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the role of safety locus of control (an individual's belief in their ability to influence safety outcomes) in workplace safety.
To develop and validate a measure for assessing safety locus of control.
To determine if safety locus of control offers incremental validity to safety climate in predicting safety outcomes.

Main Methods:

Development of a safety locus of control scale (Study 1).
Evaluation of the scale's construct validity (Study 2).
Assessment of the incremental validity of safety locus of control over safety climate for predicting safety performance (Study 3) with 792 participants.

Main Results:

A reliable and valid measure for safety locus of control was developed.
Safety locus of control was found to significantly predict safety performance.
Safety locus of control explained additional variance in safety outcomes beyond safety climate.

Conclusions:

Safety locus of control is an important individual difference factor influencing workplace safety.
Safety models should incorporate both individual differences (like safety locus of control) and environmental factors (like safety climate).
Interventions aimed at enhancing employees' internal safety locus of control may improve overall workplace safety.
