Purpose:
The reorganization of medical teaching is increasing the demands on practical medical teaching. This study presents a novel integrative teaching concept for doctoral students. It provides a practical exercise in the preparation of scientific publications from planning and writing to submission.
Materials And Methods:
The seminar consists of 3 parts. In the first theoretical part, consisting of 4 teaching units lasting 60 minutes each, various publications are analyzed on the basis of concrete examples: Case reports, different scientific studies, reviews, and meta-analyses. In the second practical part, the students are given a case, which they prepare as a case report in small groups of 3 people over 2-3 weeks. After writing the case report, the authors present it to the seminar group and discuss it critically. In the third practical part, the students are asked to submit the final case report to a scientific journal. After working on the cases, the students completed an evaluation form using a five-point Likert scale.
Results:
30 students (10 small groups) completed the seminar. 7 small groups (21 students, 70%) published their case reports. For one small group (3 students, 10%), the case report is in the 2nd revision. In one group (3 students, 10%), the case report was rejected and the students decided not to continue working on the case. One group (3 students, 10%) is still working on their case report. All 30 students evaluated the seminar. The majority of students rated the teaching concept positively with regard to the level of knowledge, didactic structure, and motivation for research work. All students were in favor of continuing the seminar.
Conclusion:
Our concept demonstrates the effectiveness and high acceptance of applied practice-based learning in medical research.
Key Points:
· Practical exercises in the preparation of scientific publications have a high degree of acceptance among students.. · Curricular teaching should include practical scientific seminars..
