Social Traps01:41

Social Traps

26.3K
Social traps are negative situations where people get caught in a direction or relationship that later proves to be unpleasant, with no easy way to back out of or avoid. The concept was orignally introduced by John Platt who applied psychology to Garrett Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons", where in New England herd owners could let their cattle graze in the common ground. This situation seems like a good idea, but an individual could have an advantage. If they owned...

Short-distance Transport of Resources02:12

Short-distance Transport of Resources

17.4K
Short-distance transport refers to transport that occurs over a distance of just 2-3 cells, crossing the plasma membrane in the process. Small uncharged molecules, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water, can diffuse across the plasma membrane on their own. In contrast, ions and larger molecules require the assistance of transport proteins due to their charge or size. Transport across membranes also occurs within individual cells, playing a variety of essential roles for the plant as a whole.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Urban Planning
  • Transportation Science

Background:

  • Physical activity is crucial for health, but many struggle to incorporate it daily.
  • Public transportation (PT) users can increase walking by shifting travel modes.
  • Current trip planning apps do not prioritize walking for PT commuters.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate integrating more walking into PT commutes.
  • To assess feasibility without compromising travel time, accessibility, or service.
  • To inform the 'More Walking' wellness initiative by modifying trip planning apps.

Main Methods:

  • Examined walking thresholds' impact on walking distance.
  • Utilized a trip-planning algorithm with 2,149 commuter home addresses.
  • Focused on commuters traveling to a single workplace in a Tel Aviv suburb.

Main Results:

  • Increasing walking thresholds maintained or reduced total travel time.
  • Demonstrated the potential for enhanced physical activity within existing commutes.

Conclusions:

  • A 'more walking' option in trip planning is a feasible strategy.
  • This approach can integrate physical activity and wellness into daily commutes.
  • Supports population-based wellness initiatives through technological integration.
