PEFR in Type II Diabetes Mellitus and its Correlation with Sugar Levels, HbA1c Levels, and Duration of Disease

Background:
Diabetes mellitus has been proven to have detrimental effects on microvasculature.
Objectives:
This research aimed to find out the outcome of type II diabetes mellitus on peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and its correlation with the increasing levels of fasting blood sugar, postprandial blood sugar, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and duration of disease.
Materials And Methods:
Forty known type II diabetic patients having diabetes for more than 5 years were taken as cases and a similar number of age and sex-matched subjects were taken as controls. PEFR was measured in liters by using a computerized spirometer (Medspiror), three times at every 15-min interval, and the best of three recordings was taken as per American Thoracic Society guidelines. Statistical analysis was done by using the Student's t-test and analysis of variance test.
Results:
The mean PEFR for male cases (7.42 L/s) was found to be considerably dissimilar (P < 0.05) from that of male controls with a mean value of 8.87 L/s. PEFR was found to be decreased considerably in diabetic cases as compared to controls.
Conclusion:
This study demonstrates that the lung should also be considered as a primary target organ for diabetic complications, including micro and macrovascular complications. We found that PEFR was found to be significantly decreased in both male and female diabetics.
