Comparative Study of Local Anesthesia Techniques for Pain Management in Mandibular Third Molar Extractions

Background:
Ensuring that after mandibular third molar extractions, patients can live life in comfort with no ill effects is a priority. Thus, the onset time, duration of action, and efficacy of relieving pain differ from one drug to another.
Materials And Methods:
Patients undergoing mandibular third molar extractions were compared with regard to the efficacy of local anesthesia in each group receiving 2% lignocaine with adrenaline, 0.75% ropivacaine, and 0.5% bupivacaine. Various parameters were evaluated.
Results:
Ropivacaine exhibited a longer duration of anesthesia and superior postoperative pain control compared to lignocaine and bupivacaine (P < 0.05). While lignocaine had the fastest onset, its analgesic duration was the shortest. Bupivacaine showed intermediate results. Statistical analysis confirmed significant differences among the groups.
Conclusion:
Ropivacaine is more effective in managing postoperative pain and offers a longer duration of anesthesia than lignocaine making it the preferable agent for mandibular third molar extractions.
