Hydroxyapatite (HAP) composite coatings have attracted considerable interest in orthopaedic implants because they enhance osseointegration and biological compatibility. This research explores the effect of selective ceria (CeO₂) reinforcement within ceramic-polymer hybrid hydroxyapatite/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) double-layered coatings deposited electrochemically on Ti-6Al-4V substrates. The HAP-Ce/PVA3 dual-layer coatings exhibit enhanced physicochemical, hydrophilic, mechanical, and biological characteristics due to the synergistic interaction between HAP and CeO₂ in the lower layer and strong interfacial bonding with the PVA upper layer. The optimized 3-minute deposition yields superior performance compared to longer durations or reversed CeO₂ configurations. HAP-Ce/PVA3 shows enhanced crystallinity, refined grain morphology, and significantly improved Vickers hardness (1600 HV) and adhesion strength (58 MPa). Biocompatibility assays confirmed >75 % cell viability, demonstrating excellent bioactivity. This composite, exhibiting ideal wettability, cytological compatibility, and robust adhesion, represents a significant improvement with strong potential for enhanced osseointegration and bone regeneration in advanced orthopaedic applications.
