SafeChole4all: pilot validation of a novel curriculum for safe laparoscopic cholecystectomy training

Background:
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is one of the most frequent procedures for junior residents, yet access to validated, affordable, and anatomically accurate simulation tools remains limited. In this study, we evaluated a novel training approach using a cost-effective silicone-based model for simulating laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC), integrated into a structured course designed for first-year general surgery residents.
Methods:
A prospective cohort of 35 first-year general surgery residents participated in a hands-on LC course using the "SafeChole4all" curriculum. Participants were randomized into two groups, with one group (A) viewing a procedural (silicone model) video prior to simulation. Performance was assessed using a procedure-specific scale (Procedure Specific Objective Assessment-PROSOA), with feedback collected immediately and again after one year.
Results:
Of 35 participants, those in the video group demonstrated significantly better results in execution, quality, and overall performance. Post-course surveys (n = 32, 91%) showed strong consensus on the model adequacy and educational value. One year later, 11 respondents reported sustained confidence gains and high satisfaction, though most had not yet performed LC independently.
Conclusions:
The SafeChole4all simulation model and curriculum offers preliminary evidence of educational value for early-stage LC training, but larger, adequately powered studies are required to confirm these findings.
