Background:

  • Participation in professional settings can be challenging for individuals with multiple disadvantage (homelessness, mental ill health, addiction, criminal justice involvement, domestic violence/abuse), risking re-traumatisation.
  • Safe and effective engagement is crucial for personal and professional development, fostering meaningful change.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze how Independent Futures (IF), an organization for people with lived experience of multiple disadvantage, enabled co-production within services and systems.
  • To understand how individuals with lived experience can be best supported in co-production.
  • To examine the impact of co-production involvement on individuals with lived experience.

Main Methods:

  • Semi-structured interviews with 16 IF members and 3 IF staff.
  • Two-wave staff survey (147 responses) assessing perceived ability to embed co-production in Changing Futures partner organisations.
  • Analysis of internal documentation to illustrate IF's co-production work diversity.

Main Results:

  • Trauma-informed principles facilitated personal growth, confidence, and work skills for IF members, contributing to 65 workstreams.
  • Embedding co-production into wider services and systems proved challenging.
  • Staff survey identified obstacles including resources, time, and hierarchical cultures.

Conclusions:

  • Lived experience organizations can effectively model trauma-informed practice and influence systems.
  • Sustainable embedding of trauma-informed principles requires flexibility, openness, and universal commitment, avoiding tokenism.
  • Trust is destroyed, and endeavors undermined by any evidence of tokenism in co-production efforts.
