Background And Aims:
Resilience in spousal caregivers plays a crucial role in safeguarding mental well-being. Moreover, resilience in female and male caregivers may be influenced by distinct factors when caring for patients with advanced cancer. This study aimed to investigate and compare risk and protective factors of resilience among husbands and wives of patients with advanced cancer in China.
Methods:
This cross-sectional study enrolled 360 spouses of patients with newly diagnosed advanced cancer from January to June 2022 in China, including 154 husbands and 206 wives. The participants reported on resilience levels, patient functional status, social support, coping self-efficacy, mutuality, and caregiver burden. Multiple regression analyses were used to evaluate the influential factors of resilience.
Results:
Wives of patients with advanced cancer demonstrated higher overall resilience levels (54.92 ± 8.07) than those of husbands (53.42 ± 6.80), although without statistical significance. However, wives exhibited a higher level than husbands in the tenacity dimension (t = 2.018, p = 0.044). Educational level, caregiver burden, and mutuality were significant factors influencing resilience among husbands, accounting for 49.5% of the variance in resilience. Educational level, patient function, social support, mutuality, and coping self-efficacy were significant influencing factors of resilience among wives, accounting for 58.8% of the variance in resilience.
Conclusion:
The present study emphasized different factors of resilience between spouses of patients with newly diagnosed advanced cancer. Current results can be used to develop gender-specific interventions for resilience in spousal caregivers of patients with serious illness during early treatment stages.
