Recent research has shown a great deal of interest in cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), which are natural nanomaterials with high aspect ratio, high specific area, outstanding stability, and attractive optical properties. CNCs can form chiral nematic films upon evaporation of the solvents, which can act as versatile and useful building blocks or host matrices to create various luminescent materials. Recently, researchers have shown a lot of interest in CNCs' capacity to arrange structurally colored films as a potential source of luminescent sustainable materials. In this perspective, we dive into the most recent research on CNC-based light-emitting systems and conclude with a discussion of future opportunities for CNC-based light-emitting systems, which have a great potential for developing innovative optoelectronics.
