Analysis of the Relationships Between the Eyeball and the Orbit in Patients Under 4 Years Old Using Computed

Objective:
The relationship between the orbital ring and the eyeball in the sagittal plane, as observed through computed tomography (CT), is crucial for the surgical approach, correction, and postoperative monitoring (normalization, failure, or recurrence) of craniofacial anomalies affecting the orbital region of the eyeball. The objective of this study is to describe the anthropometric reference points proposed by Mulliken and colleagues and the indices of Waitzman and Posnick using CT in patients under 4 years old.
Methods:
A retrospective, observational, descriptive study was conducted on patients under 4 years old who were treated at the Hospital Infantil Universitario de San José and Hospital de San José in Bogotá, between June 2014 and November 2021, and who underwent CT scans of the skull, simple face, and paranasal sinuses.
Results:
A total of 101 infants were included, with a female predominance. Measurements were higher in boys. The increase in measurements was most noticeable between 0 and 2 years of age. The variability of the measurements is consistent with initial studies on the subject.
Conclusion:
The determination of anthropometric points using computed tomography is a promising tool. The authors recommend validation studies, interobserver assessments, and larger sample sizes to confirm its reliability.
