Abstract:
Recent developments in the smart studio environment hold promise for improving the motivation of music students. In this study, we find that a technologically enriched piano studio significantly increases student engagement by strengthening two critical drivers of psychological engagement, the student's confidence in his/her pianistic abilities and the perceived career utility of piano skills. Instead of concentrating on statistical outputs, our results point to a dual pathway mediation: (a) smart studios help to foster the confidence of pianists (a belief in one's ability to succeed) that in turn supports greater engagement in practice, and (b) they increase the perceived career utility of piano training and encourage students to invest more effort. We further show that combining AI-powered piano coaching (teacher-led use of AI feedback) and IntelliPiano apps (self-directed practice tools) increases these benefits. Theoretically, our results extend the Job Demands-Resources model by providing evidence of how a supportive learning environment acts as a "resource" that increases engagement through personal motivational factors. The research also adds to the Expectancy-Value Theory by showing how expectancy (confidence) and value (utility) beliefs can be manipulated using smart technologies. Overall, this research is a valuable new insight into how to motivate music students, and how to practically combine human instruction with intelligent tools to develop confident career-oriented pianists.
