  • Functional connectivity between the left lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) and left lateral premotor cortex (LPMC) positively correlated with both WMC and self-future mind wandering.
  • LPFC-LPMC connectivity mediated the relationship between WMC and self-future mind wandering, and vice versa.

Conclusions:

  • The findings support the context regulation hypothesis, highlighting the role of LPFC-LPMC connectivity in integrating predictive processes for future actions.
  • Neural connectivity may influence the balance between executive control and future-oriented thought, with bidirectional mediation observed.
