Abstract:
Drowning is the leading cause of death among US children of ages 1 to 4 years. Disparities in fatal drowning rates among children based on race and ethnicity persist, despite an overall reduction in fatal drowning rates over the past 2 decades. Drowning countermeasures include barriers that prevent unanticipated water access, competent supervision and lifeguards, water competency and swim lessons, life jacket use, and early rescue and resuscitation. Multiple layers of prevention are necessary since no single method is completely effective in preventing drowning. The US National Water Safety Action Plan describes the tools necessary to prevent drowning.
