Prosthetic and implant rehabilitation in hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia: A 13-year follow-up

Abstract:
This clinical report describes the long-term oral rehabilitation of a male patient with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED), a congenital disorder characterized by hypodontia, hypotrichosis, and hypohidrosis. At age 3, the patient presented with only 2 conical teeth and total edentulism in the remaining arches. A multidisciplinary, staged treatment plan was implemented from early childhood to adulthood that included preserving erupted teeth, interim prostheses, orthodontics, and early strategic implant placement adapted to craniofacial growth. Initial mandibular implants were placed at age 8, followed by additional implants and prostheses over time. Definitive rehabilitation at age 18 consisted of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture (CAD-CAM) screw-retained prostheses and ceramic restorations. At the 1-year follow-up, esthetics and function were stable.
