RLC Series Circuits: Impedance01:29

RLC Series Circuits: Impedance

2.5K
When current flow is opposed in a DC or AC circuit, it is referred to as resistance or impedance, respectively. Impedance plays a key role in determining the performance of AC circuits. It is represented by Z, which is a combination of resistance and reactance, and depends upon the angular frequency, measured in ohms.
Thus, the magnitude of the impedance is given by the following equation,

Impedances and Admittance

In the realm of AC circuits, passive circuit elements like resistors, inductors, and capacitors take on a different character when characterized by phasor voltage and current. Their behavior is expressed through impedance, a vital concept in AC circuit analysis.
Impedance is a measure of resistance to sinusoidal current flow in an AC circuit. Unlike their behavior in DC circuits, where inductors appear as short circuits and capacitors as open circuits, the behavior of these components in AC...

Series Impedances: Three-Phase Line

415
Calculating series impedances for a three-phase overhead line involves evaluating resistances and inductive reactances in a network with three-phase and multiple neutral conductors grounded at regular intervals.
Using Kirchhoff's laws, an integro-differential equation for the network is derived. This equation accounts for unbalanced phase currents, which may induce return currents through neutral wires and the earth, seeking the least impedance path. Earth return conductors can replace the...

Bode Plots Construction

1.1K
The Bode plot is an essential tool in control system analysis, mapping the frequency response of a system through a magnitude plot and a phase plot, both against a logarithmic frequency axis. To construct a Bode plot, consider the transfer function H(ω):

Fault Types

When analyzing a single line-to-ground fault from phase A to ground at a three-phase bus, it is important to consider the fault impedance. This impedance is zero for a bolted fault, equal to the arc impedance for an arcing fault, and represents the total fault impedance for a transmission-line insulator flashover. To derive sequence and phase currents, fault conditions are translated from the phase domain to the sequence domain.
For line-to-line faults occurring between phases B and C, the...

Interference: Path Lengths01:10

Interference: Path Lengths

1.8K
Consider two sources of sound, that may or may not be in phase, emitting waves at a single frequency, and consider the frequencies to be the same.
Two special sources may be considered when they are in phase. This can be easily achieved by feeding the two sources from the same source. An example would be synchronizing the two speakers by feeding them with the same source, such as the sound waves produced by a tuning fork. This setup ensures that the two sources have the same frequency and are...

Area of Science:

  • Speech Science
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Physiology

Background:

  • Understanding tongue-palate contact is crucial for speech articulation.
  • Previous research often focused on pathological speech, limiting insights into normal articulation mechanics.
  • Objective measures of tongue-palate contact strength are needed for speech analysis and rehabilitation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how variations in tongue-palate contact strength, induced by different articulation manners, affect electrical impedance phase angle.
  • To explore the relationship between electrical impedance phase angle, tongue pressure, and surface electromyography (sEMG) in healthy participants.
  • To determine if electrical impedance phase angle can serve as an objective marker for articulation strength.

Main Methods:

  • Simultaneous recording of electrical impedance, tongue pressure, and sEMG during consonant articulation tasks in six healthy adults.
  • Utilizing a custom-made flexible palatal sensor to measure impedance characteristics.
  • Conducting acoustic analysis, including F2 slope and tongue-palate contact duration, to correlate with physiological measures.

Main Results:

  • Increased tongue contact strength (TCS) was positively correlated with higher electrical impedance phase angles, greater tongue pressure, and stronger sEMG signals.
  • Acoustic analysis revealed that stronger tongue contacts were associated with steeper F2 slopes and shorter contact durations.
  • Electrical impedance phase angle demonstrated a significant relationship with objective measures of articulation strength.

Conclusions:

  • Electrical impedance phase angle shows potential as an objective, non-invasive marker for quantifying tongue-palate contact strength during speech.
  • Findings provide a foundation for developing new diagnostic and therapeutic tools for speech disorders.
  • Further research with larger sample sizes is warranted to validate these findings and explore clinical applications.
