Objective:
To investigate the phototherapy exposure in extremely preterm infants using different treatment protocols and devices.
Design:
Cross-sectional observational study enrolling extremely preterm infants requiring light emitting diodes (LED) phototherapy during the first week of life. The duration of phototherapy applying various expert opinion-based treatment guidelines was calculated. Irradiance was measured, and spectral power was estimated.
Results:
Forty-two preterm infants were studied. The phototherapy duration changed depending on the treatment protocol (overall p < 0.001) and ranged from 0 to 72 h, with a median coefficient of variation of 66.6 [44-124]%. The spectral power was significantly different depending on the LED device (overall p < 0.001) and ranged from 8.6 to 17.8 mW/nm, with a median coefficient of variation of 18.1 [18-18.3]% CONCLUSIONS: The phototherapy exposure of preterm infants significantly varies both as cumulative duration of therapy and spectral power, due to different treatment protocols and devices.
