Background:
Pregnant patients with congenital heart disease (CHD), particularly those with unrepaired defects, require specialized multidisciplinary care to optimize maternal and fetal outcomes.
Case Summary:
A 38-year-old gravida 5 para 2 woman presented at 20 weeks of gestation with palpitations and a murmur. Evaluation revealed a transitional atrioventricular septal defect with moderate left atrioventricular valve regurgitation. Medical management was guided by multidisciplinary review, and a detailed delivery plan was embedded in the electronic medical record (EMR). She developed pre-eclampsia at 37 weeks and underwent vaginal delivery.
Discussion:
Patients with unrepaired atrioventricular septal defect are at increased risk for pregnancy complications and postpartum decompensation. EMR-integrated delivery plans improve team coordination and reduce risk by ensuring consistent communication across specialties. This case highlights the practical application of such tools in CHD pregnancy management.
