Hypothesis Test for Test of Independence01:16

Hypothesis Test for Test of Independence

7.4K
The test of independence is a chi-square-based test used to determine whether two variables or factors are independent or dependent. This hypothesis test is used to examine the independence of the variables. One can construct two qualitative survey questions or experiments based on the variables in a contingency table. The goal is to see if the two variables are unrelated (independent) or related (dependent). The null and alternative hypotheses for this test are:

Oppositional Defiant Disorder01:30

Oppositional Defiant Disorder

596
A persistent pattern of angry or irritable mood, defiant behavior, or vindictiveness characterizes Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Symptoms must occur over at least six months, involve interactions with individuals beyond siblings, and meet specific diagnostic criteria to be clinically significant. The disorder affects emotional regulation, social interactions, and behavior, often manifesting early in life and influencing long-term development and functioning.

Correlations02:20

Correlations

35.7K
Correlation means that there is a relationship between two or more variables (such as ice cream consumption and crime), but this relationship does not necessarily imply cause and effect. When two variables are correlated, it simply means that as one variable changes, so does the other. We can measure correlation by calculating a statistic known as a correlation coefficient. A correlation coefficient is a number from -1 to +1 that indicates the strength and direction of the relationship between...

Close Relationships and Culture01:29

Close Relationships and Culture

217
Culture shapes how people approach attraction, choose partners, and build long-term relationships. While some preferences in mate selection appear consistent across cultures, such as men valuing physical attractiveness and women emphasizing financial resources, cultural contexts influence how these preferences are expressed and prioritized. Marriage extends beyond romantic ideals in many societies and is deeply embedded in social, economic, and religious frameworks. The Role of Culture in Mate...

Introduction to Test of Independence01:21

Introduction to Test of Independence

2.9K
In statistics, the term independence means that one can directly obtain the probability of any event involving both variables by multiplying their individual probabilities. Tests of independence are chi-square tests involving the use of a contingency table of observed (data) values.
The test statistic for a test of independence is similar to that of a goodness-of-fit test:

Regression Toward the Mean01:52

Regression Toward the Mean

6.8K
Regression toward the mean (“RTM”) is a phenomenon in which extremely high or low values—for example, and individual’s blood pressure at a particular moment—appear closer to a group’s average upon remeasuring. Although this statistical peculiarity is the result of random error and chance, it has been problematic across various medical, scientific, financial and psychological applications. In particular, RTM, if not taken into account, can interfere when...

Summary

Raising the minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) in Spain reduced adolescent alcohol consumption by up to 17%. This policy change also improved exam performance by 4% and decreased anxiety medication use, highlighting benefits for youth education and well-being.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Adolescent Health
  • Educational Psychology

Background:

  • Many European nations have increased the minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) from 16 to 18.
  • These policy shifts often involve comprehensive alcohol control measures.
  • Adolescent alcohol consumption remains a significant public health concern in Europe.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of MLDA reforms on educational outcomes in adolescents.
  • To quantify the effects of reduced teenage drinking on academic performance and mental health.

Main Methods:

  • Exploited the staggered implementation of MLDA changes across Spanish regions.
  • Analyzed changes in adolescent alcohol consumption, exam performance, and medication use (anxiolytics, hypnosedatives).
  • Controlled for other substance use, leisure habits, and study effort.

Main Results:

  • Adolescent alcohol consumption (ages 14-17) decreased by 7-17%.
  • Exam performance improved by 4% of a standard deviation.
  • Use of anxiolytics and hypnosedatives declined by 10%, indicating improved mental health.

Conclusions:

  • Increasing the MLDA is an effective strategy to reduce adolescent drinking and improve educational attainment.
  • Evidence supports the neurobiological link between alcohol, cognitive development, and anxiety.
  • Policy interventions aimed at curbing youth alcohol consumption offer a significant opportunity to enhance academic outcomes in Europe.
