Long-term evaluation of calcium silicate-based cement in endodontic indications: Five-year results on effectiveness

Objective:
This study aimed to collect clinical data evaluating the performance and safety of Biodentine™, a calcium silicate-based cement, 5 years after treatment for the following endodontic indications: root resorption repair (internal and external), root and furcation perforation repair, apexification, root end-filling, and revitalisation.
Methods:
A retro-prospective multicentre observational clinical investigation was conducted to gather long-term performance and safety data on Biodentine™ when used for its endodontic indications. Clinical and radiological examinations were performed during two follow-up visits at 1-5 years (V1) and 10 years (V2). The investigators were practising in private dental clinics or hospital settings and members of the Recherche Clinique en Odontologie Libérale (ReCOL) network, which is the French dental practice-based research network. The design aimed to collect real-world data from routine clinical practice.
Results:
One hundred and forty-four patients were included, having undergone treatment for resorption repair (n = 21), perforation repair (n = 42), apexification (n = 72), root-end filling (n = 5), or revitalisation (n = 4). At V1, 108 treatment successes (75 %), 12 functional teeth (8.3 %), 5 inconclusive cases (3.5 %), and 19 treatment failures (13.2 %) were observed.
Conclusions:
These results indicate a positive trend regarding the long-term performance of Biodentine™. Teeth remained generally functional (86.8 %, corresponding to all outcomes except treatment failure) during the up-to-5-year follow-up.
Clinical Significance:
These findings suggest that Biodentine™ is safe and effective for long-term use in its endodontic indications.
