Introduction:
Assessing asthma self-management in school-aged children is crucial for healthcare professionals to support effective health behaviors. However, a valid, culturally appropriate tool has been lacking. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Thai Childhood Asthma Self-Management Scale (CASMS).
Method:
Using DeVellis's scale development approach, the process included defining objectives, item generation and refinement, expert review, and administration to a sample. Psychometric testing involved exploratory factor analysis with data from 153 Thai children with asthma, aged 7-18, in Bangkok, Thailand (March-June 2023).
Results:
The final 13-item self-report scale, rated on a 5-point Likert-type scale, showed excellent content validity (content validity index = 0.98) and reliability (Cronbach's α = .82). Three factors, including symptom experience, management strategies, and outcomes, explained 60.96% of the variance.
Discussion:
The CASMS is a reliable and valid tool for assessing asthma self-management in Thai children, supporting culturally tailored and effective asthma care strategies.
