Background:

  • Single-use flexible bronchoscopes (SUFB) present advantages like cost-effectiveness and reduced infection risk over reusable flexible bronchoscopes (RFB).
  • While used for basic procedures, SUFB performance in advanced bronchoscopic interventions is not well-documented.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare user experience and performance of a specific SUFB (VathinH-SteriScope) against a traditional RFB (Olympus BF-1TH190).
  • To evaluate scope usability in both general and interventional pulmonologists via low-fidelity simulation.

Main Methods:

  • A single-center pilot study utilized mannequin-based simulation.
  • Pulmonologists assessed image quality, ergonomics, maneuverability, tool interaction, and overall usability on a Likert scale.
  • Two bronchoscope models were compared: VathinH-SteriScope SUFB and Olympus BF-1TH190 RFB.

Main Results:

  • Reusable flexible bronchoscopes (RFB) scored higher overall in basic procedures (4.57±0.72 vs. 4.23±0.75; P<0.01).
  • RFB was preferred by 55% of participants for basic procedures.
  • For advanced procedures, RFB excelled in foreign body removal and tracheostomy placement, while SUFB showed comparable or superior performance in stent placement and balloon dilation due to a larger working channel.

Conclusions:

  • Single-use flexible bronchoscopes (SUFB) demonstrate comparable performance to reusable flexible bronchoscopes (RFB) in simulated basic and advanced bronchoscopic procedures.
  • SUFBs can be a viable alternative to RFBs in interventional pulmonary practice.
  • Further high-fidelity simulation and human studies are recommended to validate these findings.
