Abstract:
Maintaining bone health involves complex interactions among nutrients, hormones, and physiological mechanisms, with vitamin D playing a pivotal role. Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium and phosphate, which are critical minerals for bone development, maintenance, and repair. Disruptions in mineral ion homeostasis can lead to conditions such as hypocalcemia, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and rickets, which are prevalent worldwide. Inadequate vitamin D impairs bone health, increasing the risk of fractures and catabolic bone diseases. This chapter elaborates on the synthesis, activation, and function of vitamin D, highlighting its essential role in bone health, from supporting growth in children to maintaining bone strength in adults. It also elaborates on how vitamin D enhances healing after a fracture by regulating the immune response, inflammation, and mineralization process.

Role of Vitamins in Maintaining Bone Health
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is involved in the process of bone remodeling. Retinoic acid, the active metabolite of Vitamin A, has nuclear receptors in osteoblasts and osteoclasts, which are involved in bone remodeling.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 acts as a cofactor during the formation of osteoblast-related proteins, such as osteocalcin. Vitamin B12 plays a role...
Role of Skin in Vitamin D Synthesis
The solar UV B rays (290-315 nm) are absorbed by the skin, and 7-dehydrocholesterol (provitamin D3) photolyzes it to previtamin D3, which undergoes a rapid transformation to vitamin...
Fractures: Bone Repair
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the...
Essential Minerals for Bone Health
Calcium and Phosphorus
Calcium is a critical component of bones, especially in the form of calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate. Since the body cannot make calcium, it must be obtained from the diet. However, calcium cannot be absorbed from the small intestine without...

Connective Tissue Cell Types
Fat cells (adipocytes), smooth muscle cells (myoblasts), and bone cells (osteoblasts) are some connective tissue cell types. Some immune system cells...
