Types of Step-Growth Polymers: Polyesters

2.5K
The introduction of polyesters has brought major development to the textile industry. The wrinkle-free behavior of polyester blends has eliminated the need for starching and ironing clothes.
Polyesters are commonly prepared from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol; the crude product is known as poly(ethylene terephthalate) or PET. However, polyesters are synthesized industrially by transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol at 150 °C. The two reactants and the polymer...

Bioavailability Enhancement: Drug Stability Enhancement and GI Retention

186
Body:Improving a drug's stability in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is paramount for enhancing its bioavailability and therapeutic effectiveness. Various strategies are employed to protect the drug from the harsh gastric milieu and to ensure its release and absorption at the desired site within the GI tract.Polymer coatings are one such method used to shield drugs from the stomach's acidic environment. By preventing premature drug release, these coatings improve the bioavailability of unstable...

Step-Growth Polymerization: Overview

4.3K
Step-growth or condensation polymerization is a stepwise reaction of bi or multifunctional monomers to form long-chain polymers. As all the monomers are reactive, most of the monomers are consumed at the early stages of the reaction to form small chains of reactive oligomers, which then combine to form long polymer chains in the late stages. Hence, the reaction has to proceed for a long time to achieve high molecular weight polymers.
Many natural and synthetic polymers are produced by...

Area of Science:

  • Polymer Science
  • Materials Science
  • Food Science

Background:

  • Nondegradable plastic packaging causes environmental pollution and microplastic contamination.
  • Biodegradable food packaging materials are crucial for sustainable development and public health.
  • Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a biocompatible, water-soluble polymer with desirable film-forming, mechanical, and thermal properties, making it a potential plastic alternative.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review preparation methods, physicochemical properties, and applications of PVA-based films for food packaging.
  • To address the scarcity of research on PVA functionalization, particularly concerning its hydrophilicity in high-humidity environments.
  • To provide a unified framework linking molecular design to practical food packaging performance.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic examination of PVA film preparation strategies.
  • Integration of recent advances in hydrophobic modification and gas-barrier enhancement techniques.
  • Analysis of functional additives and their impact on PVA properties.

Main Results:

  • PVA exhibits conditional biodegradability and excellent biocompatibility.
  • PVA films possess outstanding film-forming, mechanical toughness, thermal stability, and optical transparency.
  • Hydrophobic modifications and functional additives can enhance PVA's performance for food packaging applications.

Conclusions:

  • PVA is a promising material for sustainable food packaging, offering a viable alternative to conventional plastics.
  • Targeted modifications and advanced processing are key to overcoming PVA's limitations, such as hydrophilicity.
  • This review offers an application-driven perspective to guide future research and development of PVA-based packaging.
