The structural and orientational transitions in the thin films of dibenzopentacene grown on Bi(111) have been investigated with low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. At the initial stage, dibenzopentacene molecules form two-dimensional (2D) gas over the substrate surface. With the coverage increasing, three condensed phases have been observed in the monolayer regime. (i) The low-density phase is composed of parallel rows of flat-lying molecules, which exhibit single-molecule chirality in the homochiral domains. (ii) Some molecules are intercalated into the low-density phase with edge-on orientation and form single-molecule chains. (iii) The high-density phase is composed of parallel trimer rows, and each trimer contains one flat-lying molecule and two edge-on molecules. (iv) In the multilayer regime, 3D molecular islands form on the first layer, indicating Stranski-Krastanov growth mode. These results provide insights into the correlation between molecular orientation and structures of thin films.

Thermal Sigmatropic Reactions: Overview
Sigmatropic shifts are classified based on an order term [i, j ], where i and j indicate the number of atoms across which each end of the σ bond migrates. Below are examples of a [3,3] sigmatropic shift in 1,5-hexadiene, referred...

π Molecular Orbitals of 1,3-Butadiene
The simplest conjugated diene is 1,3-butadiene: a four-carbon system where each carbon is sp2-hybridized and has an unhybridized p orbital that contains an unpaired electron. According to molecular orbital theory, atomic orbitals combine to form molecular orbitals such that the number...

Conformations of Cyclohexane
The chair form is the most stable and derives its name from its resemblance to the “easy chair.” In the chair conformation, two carbon atoms are arranged out-of-plane — one above and one below, minimizing the torsional strain. In the chair form, the bond angle is very close to the ideal...
