Coping Strategies: Problem Focused

403
Coping strategies are methods people use to manage, tolerate, or reduce the effects of stressors. These strategies involve both behavioral and psychological actions to handle stressful situations. One common approach is problem-focused coping, which aims to change or eliminate the source of stress rather than merely addressing its consequences. This method involves taking direct action to resolve the issue causing stress.
For example, consider a student who struggles to understand their...

Psychosis: Goals of Pharmacotherapy

453
Antipsychotic drugs are a crucial treatment method for acute and chronic psychoses, bipolar illness, and behavioral disorders. The selection of these drugs depends on several factors, including the state of the disease, clinical judgment, possible drug interactions, and the patient's sensitivity to adverse effects. In immediate scenarios, such as delirium and dementia, short-term treatment with low doses of high-potency typical or atypical agents can effectively manage symptom exacerbation.

Specialized care settings or centers are situated in convenient locations within the community and offer care to a specific group or population. They consist of daycare facilities, mental health facilities, rural health facilities, educational institutions, industries, shelters for the homeless, and rehabilitation facilities.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Public Health
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Individuals with a history of suicide attempts face a high risk of recurrence.
  • Targeted interventions are crucial for this vulnerable population.
  • The Hospital Outreach Postsuicide attempt Engagement (HOPE) program offers psychosocial support post-suicide attempt to reduce emergency department (ED) re-presentations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the longitudinal outcomes of the HOPE program.
  • To compare HOPE participants with a matched treatment as usual (TAU) control group.
  • To assess the impact of HOPE on emergency department (ED) presentations and re-presentation times.

Main Methods:

  • A case-controlled study involving 100 HOPE participants and 100 matched TAU participants.
  • Analysis of ED presentations over 4 years (2 years pre- and 2 years post-intervention).
  • Assessment of presentation frequency, type, and time to re-presentation.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in the overall number of ED presentations between HOPE and TAU groups.
  • HOPE participants showed significantly fewer mental health-related ED presentations post-intervention.
  • Time to first mental health-related re-presentation did not significantly differ between groups.

Conclusions:

  • The HOPE program effectively reduced mental health-related ED visits.
  • HOPE did not significantly extend the time to re-presentation for suicide attempts.
  • Integration with long-term community support may enhance HOPE's effectiveness for suicide prevention.
