Abstract:
The management of complex craniofacial deformities, like Goldenhar Syndrome, demands the application of novel technologies supported by knowledge of conventional surgical techniques to achieve the best outcome. This is achievable by the use of virtual surgical planning (VSP) and 3D printing, which provides precision and personalization, with better functional and aesthetic outcomes. In orthognathic surgery, the use of VSP and 3D printed cutting guides and fixation plates is now commonplace. As for temporomandibular joint reconstruction, the use of alloplastic prostheses became widely accepted when the combination of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene for the glenoid fossa component and Cobalt-Chromium-Molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) alloy with titanium coating for the mandible/condyle component proved to be successful long-term. The accuracy and ease of VSP with orthognathic surgery and alloplastic prostheses for the management of complex syndromic cases is a viable option for surgeons involved to consider.
