Up-conversion (UC) emission and temperature-sensing behavior of yttrium oxyfluoride co-doped with ytterbium (Yb3+) and holmium (Ho3+) was studied for temperature-sensing applications. Different powder samples were prepared using the pyrolysis method. The Ho3+ concentration was fixed for different Yb3+ concentrations. Using structural, morphological, and optical investigations, the rhombohedral YOF formation was verified. The sample co-doped with 7 mol% Yb3+ showed the highest color purity. All synthesized samples displayed the distinctive Ho3+ green UC emission. Temperature-dependent UC showed tunable emission from green to near-white light as the temperature increased. The non-thermal couple transitions 5F4,5S2 → 5I7, 5I8 and 5F5 → 5I8 were utilized to determine the temperature sensitivity parameters. The maximum absolute sensitivity was 0.17 K-1 at 303 K, while the maximum relative sensitivity was 1.3 % K-1 at 303 K. The investigations revealed positive results for temperature-sensing applications.
