Forensic characterization and discrimination of automotive paint protection films (PPFs) using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy

Abstract:
Paint protection films (PPFs) are applied to painted surfaces and high-impact areas of automobiles to safeguard against damage from scratches and rock chips. These films may be recovered as trace evidence at scenes involving traffic accidents. With preliminary visual classification and microscopic examination of their multilayered structures, the complementary application of attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) has been demonstrated to enable rapid characterization and discrimination of 28 PPF samples from various brands. The present study offers vital insights that contribute to establishing standard guides for forensic examination of PPFs.
