Differences in nighttime radiance across urban residential communities in China

Abstract:
Nighttime radiance serves as an important proxy for assessing light pollution. Analyzing nighttime radiance across different residential communities helps elucidate the unequal distribution of potential light pollution. Therefore, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of nighttime radiance in residential communities across China. Our findings highlight pronounced disparities in nighttime radiance, especially for commercial, older, and medium-priced residential communities in highly urbanized cities. Furthermore, higher NDVI values and Building Spacing are associated with reduced nighttime radiance. This study emphasizes the urgent need for effective potential light pollution mitigation strategies through smart urban planning, technological innovation, policy development, and public participation.
