Idiopathic hypoplastic right breast in a 60-year-old female: A case report

Breast hypoplasia may be acquired or congenital as well as unilateral or bilateral, it may also be isolated or associated with other pathologies such as anomalies and syndromes of the chest wall like Jeune and Poland syndromes, pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum. Usually, nonsyndromic breast hypoplasia is idiopathic though some have known causes like direct effect from radiation treatment of cutaneous hemangiomas in childhood. Other iatrogenic causes may be due to thoracotomy, previous tube thoracostomy, impaired breast development postsurgical removal of benign or malignant breast tumors during childhood. It may also be as a result of injury to the breast bud from anterior chest wall burns causing failure of complete mammary expansion. We report a case of a 60-year-old female referred for mammography who has characteristic features of hypoplastic right breast which was diagnosed based on medical history, clinical signs, and radiological findings. This case is distinctive due to the patients advanced age at presentation, the idiopathic nature of the hypoplasia confirmed by advanced imaging, and the long-term functional impact on lactation that did not, however, significantly impair her quality of life.
