Abstract:
The carboxylate platform represents an emerging biotechnology for the sustainable valorization of organic waste into medium-chain carboxylates (MCCs), which are produced via anaerobic microbial chain elongation. While industrial-scale MCCs production is underway, broader commercialization is hindered by inefficiencies in chain elongation and the high cost of downstream processing. This review systematically assesses recent advances from metabolic pathways to extraction techniques, and further identifies operational optimization and in situ product recovery as critical levers for economic feasibility. Techniques such as membrane electrolysis and liquid-liquid extraction show particular promise when integrated directly into fermentation, enhancing both product titer and selectivity. To propel the field forward, this review emphasizes the need for intelligent bioprocess monitoring, bacterial strain engineering, and the translation of integrated fermentation-separation systems from lab to industrial practice. Ultimately, achieving commercially viable MCCs production will require synergistic advances across biological and engineering fronts.
