Abstract:
A DBU-promoted, multicomponent domino reaction involving H-phosphonates, C60, and HBr/DMSO has been developed for the efficient one-pot synthesis of 1,4-(phosphonyl)[60]fullerenols. Investigations into the coordination reactions of these 1,4-phosphorylated fullerenols with Pt(PPh3)4 have facilitated the synthesis of two distinct types of 1,4-diorgano[60]fullerene platinum complexes. Furthermore, control experiments revealed the unique reactivity of 1,2-(phosphonyl)(hydro)[60]fullerene with HBr/DMSO.

Regioselectivity and Stereochemistry of Hydroboration
Hydroboration proceeds in a concerted fashion with the attack of borane on the π bond, giving a cyclic four-centered transition state. The –BH2 group is bonded to the less substituted carbon and –H to the more substituted carbon. The concerted nature requires the simultaneous addition of –H and –BH2 across the same face of the alkene giving syn stereochemistry.
