Factors Affecting Pulmonary Ventilation01:19

Factors Affecting Pulmonary Ventilation

2.7K
Besides the pressure difference between the external environment and the lungs, the airflow rate and ease of pulmonary ventilation are also influenced by three other factors: surface tension of the fluid in the alveoli, compliance of the lungs, and airway resistance.
Alveolar Surface Tension
The alveolar fluid lines the luminal surface of the alveoli and exerts a force called surface tension. This force is caused by the polar water molecules in the liquid being more strongly attracted to each...

Pulmonary Function Tests01:25

Pulmonary Function Tests

702
Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs)
Pulmonary Function Tests are crucial diagnostic tools for assessing respiratory function, particularly in patients with chronic respiratory disorders. They comprehensively evaluate lung volumes, ventilatory function, breathing mechanics, diffusion, and gas exchange. These tests help diagnose pulmonary diseases and play a significant role in monitoring disease progression, evaluating disability, and assessing response to therapy.
PFTs involve using a spirometer, a...

Panic Disorder01:27

Panic Disorder

562
Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent and sudden minutes-long episodes of intense fear, known as panic attacks. These attacks may feel like heart attacks and often happen without warning or a specific cause. They can include symptoms such as rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, chest pain, trembling, sweating, dizziness, and a sense of helplessness. During a panic attack, individuals may feel as though they are experiencing a heart attack or are in a...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease-IV: Assessement and Diagnostic Studies

3.1K
Assessing and diagnosing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) involves a detailed approach that includes a comprehensive review of medical history, physical examination, and a variety of diagnostic tests. This thorough evaluation is essential to ensure an accurate diagnosis and guide effective management strategies.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease01:22

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

2.2K
COPD is defined as a heterogeneous lung condition marked by persistent respiratory symptoms such as dyspnea, cough, and sputum production, caused by abnormalities in the airways that cause airflow obstruction.
Smoking is a primary risk factor for COPD, with over 80% of patients having a history of it. Patients typically experience progressive dyspnea or labored breathing, frequent coughing, and recurrent pulmonary infections. Many eventually succumb to respiratory failure, characterized by...

Pressure Relationships in Thoracic Cavity01:24

Pressure Relationships in Thoracic Cavity

5.6K
Breathing, otherwise known as pulmonary ventilation, is the process of air movement into and out of the lungs. The main mechanisms propelling pulmonary ventilation are atmospheric pressure (Patm), intra-pulmonary (Ppul ) or intra-alveolar pressure (Palv) within the alveoli, and intrapleural pressure (Pip) within the pleural cavity.
Breathing Mechanisms
Both intra-alveolar and intrapleural pressures rely on specific lung properties. The ability to breathe—allowing air to enter the lungs...

Summary

Most patients do not prefer a specific physician gender, but when a preference exists, women are favored over men. Monthly income was the only significant factor linked to this preference.

Area of Science:

  • Medical research
  • Patient-physician dynamics
  • Health services research

Background:

  • Physician gender preference is widely studied, particularly for gynecological care, with many female patients preferring female doctors.
  • Limited research exists on patient gender preferences within pulmonology, especially concerning influencing factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate patient gender preferences for pulmonologists.
  • To identify factors influencing these preferences.
  • To examine the link between gender preference and health locus of control.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study utilizing self-administered questionnaires.
  • Questionnaire assessed demographics, physician gender/age preferences, reasons for preference, and Health Locus of Control.
  • Data analyzed using SPSS version 25.0 with significance set at p < 0.05.

Main Results:

  • A majority of participants reported no specific gender preference for pulmonologists.
  • Among those with a preference, female pulmonologists were favored over male pulmonologists.
  • Monthly income was the sole significant factor associated with pulmonologist gender preference.

Conclusions:

  • While most patients are indifferent, a notable segment prefers female pulmonologists.
  • Monthly income is a significant determinant of physician gender preference in pulmonology.
  • Further research may explore the nuances of patient-physician gender dynamics in specialized fields.
