Abstract:
In Japan, the public has been involved in the healthcare policies of hospitals and government agencies since around 2010. However, in a 2023 survey by the Cabinet Office, only 2% of the public reported knowing about public involvement in research. More than 60% of respondents said that a major barrier to public involvement is a lack of knowledge about medical research. Educational support for the public is key issue for promoting involvement in research in Japan. We developed a systematic curriculum with the outcome that the public would have confidence to involve in cancer research. As a result, 6 core curricula and 13 competencies were identified. In addition, the educational content according to these competencies showed high educational effectiveness. The next issue is how to disseminate this systematic curriculum in accordance with the Basic Plan for the Promotion of Cancer Control.

Cancer Therapies
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...
Cancer-Critical Genes I: Proto-oncogenes
When the function of certain critical genes, especially those involved in cell cycle regulation and cell growth signaling cascades, gets disrupted, it upsets the cell cycle progression. Such cells with unchecked cell cycles start proliferating uncontrollably and eventually develop into tumors.
Such genes that act...
