None:
Acrylonitrile serves as a key building block in π-conjugated polymers. Conventional solution-based synthesis often leads to the loss of aldehyde (CHO) groups, limiting functionalization. We designed aldehyde-/cyano-functionalized precursors and successfully constructed acrylonitrile-based polymers with preserved CHO groups via acetonitrile homocoupling on Au(111) surfaces. Scanning tunneling microscopy and theoretical calculations confirm that this pathway dominates side reactions on both Ag(111) and Au(111) surfaces. This strategy enables the rational design of functional conjugated polymers with acrylonitrile linkages and aldehyde groups.

Preparation of Alkynes: Alkylation Reaction
Alkylation of terminal alkynes with primary alkyl halides in the presence of a strong base like sodium amide is one of the common methods for the synthesis of longer carbon-chain alkynes. For example, treatment of 1-propyne with sodium amide followed by reaction with ethyl bromide yields 2-pentyne.
