Abstract:
An optically active [7]helicene-fused oxanorbornene monomer was copolymerized with norbornene and its derivatives through ring-opening metathesis copolymerization (ROMCP) using Grubbs-type catalysts. The resulting copolymers exhibited tunable molecular weights and dispersities depending on the catalyst type, the monomer feed ratio, and the reaction conditions. Furthermore, functionalized norbornenes were employed to modulate the optical and physical properties of the copolymers. The chiroptical characteristics of the materials were investigated by circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectroscopy, revealing enhanced glum values compared to the corresponding helicene homopolymers. These findings demonstrate that the incorporation of helicene units into the copolymer backbones via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) enables the design of chiral polymeric materials with tailored photophysical and chiroptical properties.
