Abstract:
This study investigated the occurrence, spatiotemporal variations, sources and ecological risks of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the Bohai Bay. Fourteen PBDE congeners were detected in seawater samples with concentrations of Σ14PBDEs ranging from 4.05 to 21.41 ng/L in summer and 0.74 to 15.96 ng/L in autumn. BDE-47 was the predominant congener, followed by BDE-66 and BDE-28. PBDEs concentrations were higher nearshore compared to offshore, with summer concentrations exceeding those in autumn. The PBDEs were positively correlated with chlorophyll and chemical oxygen demand (COD) but negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen (DO). Source apportionment revealed that the commercial penta-BDE and debromination of high brominated PBDEs made the greatest contributions in seawater. Ecotoxicological risk assessments showed BDE-47 and BDE-100 posing the moderate risk among the PBDEs in the seawater of Bohai Bay.
