Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Science
  • Dental Research
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Apical periodontitis is a common inflammatory condition leading to bone destruction.
  • Current treatments may have limitations, necessitating exploration of novel therapeutic agents.
  • Natural compounds are increasingly investigated for their potential therapeutic benefits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of copaiba oil-resin in managing induced apical periodontitis in a rat model.
  • To assess the impact of copaiba oil-resin on bone lesion volume, collagen integrity, and tissue preservation.

Main Methods:

  • Apical periodontitis was induced in Wistar rats by exposing pulp chambers.
  • Copaiba oil-resin was administered systemically to the treatment group.
  • Histopathological analysis, picrosirius red staining, and microcomputed tomography were employed.

Main Results:

  • Copaiba oil-resin significantly reduced the volume of bone lesions.
  • The treatment preserved collagen fibers and reduced their degradation.
  • Histological examination revealed reduced tissue damage and preserved alveolar bone.

Conclusions:

  • Copaiba oil-resin demonstrates potential as an adjunct therapy for apical periodontitis.
  • It effectively mitigates bone loss and aids in maintaining bone quality.
  • Further research into copaiba oil-resin for endodontic applications is warranted.
