Background:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) education in schools is vital for increasing bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) rates.
  • This study evaluated the long-term knowledge and skill retention of schoolchildren following a BLS training session.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the retention of CPR knowledge and skills in schoolchildren six months after a single BLS training session.
  • To determine the effectiveness of BLS training delivered by medical students in improving bystander CPR readiness.

Main Methods:

  • A simulation-based randomized controlled trial involving 198 students aged 11-16 in Brazil.
  • The intervention group received a single theoretical-practical BLS training; the control group received no intervention.
  • Six months post-training, both groups were evaluated on CPR knowledge and practical skills using manikins and questionnaires.

  • The intervention group showed significantly better performance in completing the resuscitation sequence and higher knowledge scores compared to the control group.
