Peri-Annulations Bestow Configurational Stability onto Chiral Molecular Graphene Bowls

Abstract:
Corannulene-based bowl-shaped nanographenes are studied for their barrier to racemization (bowl inversion) through variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy and DFT-based theoretical calculations. The results indicate that in contrast to ortho-annulations, which are known to reduce the racemization barrier, peri-annulations enhance the barrier to inversion, and the use of multiple peri-annulations is a molecular design that can be applied to bestow configurational stability onto nanographene enantiomers.
