Summary

Palliative care (PC) was used in only 2.4% of burn injury patients nationally. Older patients and those with severe burns were more likely to receive PC, but many dying patients did not.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of palliative care (PC) utilization among burn injury patients.
  • To identify patient characteristics influencing PC consultation in burn care.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study using the HCUP National Inpatient Sample (2016-2021).
  • Identified patients with primary burn diagnosis.
  • Analyzed PC utilization and patient factors using chi-square and regression analyses, weighted for national representation; calculated Revised Baux (rBaux) scores.

  • 2.4% (3,535/146,455) of burn patients received PC consultation.

  • Palliative care is underutilized in burn injury patients, particularly among those who die.
  • Older age, severe burns (higher rBaux), White race, and teaching hospital settings are associated with higher PC use.
  • Further research is needed to identify and ensure access for burn patients who would benefit most from palliative care.
