Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Invisible nursing care comprises essential nursing actions that are often unrecognized and undocumented, such as emotional support, empathetic presence, and preserving patient dignity. Despite their importance, these aspects are mostly overshadowed by technical tasks and lack clear conceptualization in nursing theory and practice. METHODS: Using Walker and Avant’s concept analysis approach, this study systematically reviewed literature from PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Google Scholar up to April 2025. Out of 352 records, 15 relevant articles were analyzed to clarify the attributes, antecedents, and consequences of invisible nursing care. RESULTS: The analysis showed that the defining attributes of invisible nursing care are empathy and compassion, unseen and intangible nature, holistic focus, and personalized and contextual, Continuous and rationality, and non-technical and non-formalized. Key antecedents include nursing values and ethics, holistic education, patient vulnerability, organizational support, and nurses’ emotional resilience. Consequences involve better patient psychological well-being, stronger nurse–patient relationships, holistic recovery, higher job satisfaction, recognition challenges, and potential improvement in healthcare quality. Instruments such as the PINC-H questionnaire help measure these hidden aspects. CONCLUSION: Invisible nursing care is a vital, multidimensional aspect of patient-centered nursing. Its recognition and integration into education, practice, and policy can enhance outcomes and professional fulfillment, while future research should focus on improving measurement tools to strengthen its visibility and value.
