Depressive tendencies bias the explicit perception of average facial emotions, particularly with longer exposure. However, automatic, implicit perception of emotional faces remains unaffected by depressive symptoms.
Area of Science:
- Cognitive Psychology
- Affective Science
- Neuroscience
Background:
- Individuals with depression show deficits in encoding single facial expressions.
- The impact of subclinical depressive tendencies on perceiving average emotions from multiple faces is largely unknown.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate if depressive tendencies influence explicit and implicit ensemble perception of emotion.
- To determine how varying exposure durations affect emotion perception in individuals with high and low depressive symptoms.
Main Methods:
- Study 1: Participants with high depressive symptoms (HDS) and low depressive symptoms (LDS) judged emotion in face sets (2000ms vs. 50ms exposure).
- Study 2: Assessed automatic ensemble emotion perception using a probe identification task under similar exposure conditions.
Main Results:
- HDS group showed a bias toward anger in explicit perception at 2000ms, but not at 50ms.
- Both HDS and LDS groups exhibited similar automatic (implicit) coding of ensemble emotion across exposure times.
Conclusions:
- Depressive tendencies can selectively bias explicit ensemble emotion perception.
- Implicit, automatic processing of ensemble emotion is not affected by depressive tendencies.
