Objective:
To describe the usage patterns and preferences in the consumption of audiovisual entertainment in children aged 3 to 12 years.
Method:
A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using a 9-question online survey on audiovisual consumption habits, administered between April and June 2023 in 12 schools participating in the INFADIMED Program. A total of 2576 valid questionnaires were collected. Variables such as age, gender, platforms used, screen time, and social media usage were analyzed. Statistical analysis included frequency distributions, Chi-square tests, and log-linear regression.
Results:
YouTube was the most consumed platform (62.3%), followed by Netflix (58.6%) and Disney Plus (29.5%). Terrestrial TV channels had lower use. 87.6% used television, but portable device use increased with age. Screen use during meals was reported by 54%. TikTok was used by 26% of respondents, including those below the legal age limit. Screen time was higher on weekends. Statistically significant differences were found between preschool and primary school groups (p <0.001).
Conclusions:
Digital audiovisual leisure is deeply embedded in children's lives. OTT platforms and YouTube dominate over traditional television. This context offers an opportunity to create an educational, safe, ad-free platform designed by experts and managed by adults, to promote healthy habits from early childhood.
