Summary

Frequent vasomotor symptoms (VMS) during perimenopause and recently are independently linked to a higher risk of ischemic stroke (IS) in women. Early surveillance and preventive strategies are recommended for women experiencing VMS.

Background:

  • Ischemic stroke (IS) is the most common type of cerebrovascular disease.
  • The link between vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is known, but association with specific stroke subtypes is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and ischemic stroke (IS) in postmenopausal women.

Main Methods:

  • A multicenter case-control study included 358 postmenopausal women (179 IS patients, 179 age-matched controls).
  • VMS frequency and severity, lifestyle, and vascular risk factors were assessed.
  • Stroke severity was measured using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS).

Main Results:

  • Ischemic stroke patients had a higher prevalence and frequency of VMS during perimenopause and in the past week compared to controls.
  • Perimenopausal VMS (OR: 2.16) and recent VMS (OR: 2.06) were independently associated with IS after multivariable adjustments.
  • VMS showed substantial predictive value for IS (AUC = 0.809).

Conclusions:

  • Vasomotor symptoms (VMS) are an independent predictor of ischemic stroke (IS) risk.
  • Women experiencing frequent VMS require targeted surveillance and early preventive interventions.
