Atmospheric organic nitrogen (ON) compounds influence aerosol chemistry and climate-relevant processes, yet their sources are not fully understood. Here, we demonstrate that terpenoid-derived α-hydroxyalkyl hydroperoxides (α-HHs), important reactive intermediates in atmospheric aerosols, react rapidly with common atmospheric amines such as ethylamine, dimethylamine, and propylamine at the air-liquid interface to form high-molecular-weight ON compounds. Isotope labeling experiments confirm the product structures and reveal the reaction mechanism. Kinetic analysis shows that these heterogeneous reactions can compete with aqueous-phase hydrolysis, with the half-life of α-pinene-derived α-HHs estimated at ∼19 min exposed to 10 ppt ethylamine, suggesting that amine interactions represent a potentially significant source of ON in aerosols and cloud droplets. This pathway provides new mechanistic insight into the formation of nitrogen-containing aerosols and establishes a link between biogenic volatile organic compounds and ON production, with important implications for aerosol composition, reactivity, and atmospheric chemistry.

Preparation of Amines: Reduction of Oximes and Nitro Compounds
Though catalytic hydrogenation can reduce nitrobenzenes, the reduction is nonselective in the presence of other functional groups. For instance, if nitrobenzene contains an aldehyde group,...

Alkynes to Aldehydes and Ketones: Hydroboration-Oxidation
One of the convenient methods for the preparation of aldehydes and ketones is via hydration of alkynes. Hydroboration-oxidation of alkynes is an indirect hydration reaction in which an alkyne is treated with borane followed by oxidation with alkaline peroxide to form an enol that rapidly converts into an aldehyde or a ketone. Terminal alkynes form aldehydes, whereas internal alkynes give ketones as the final product.

Radical Anti-Markovnikov Addition to Alkenes: Mechanism
The mechanism starts with chain initiation, which involves two steps. In the first chain initiation step, a weak peroxide bond is homolytically cleaved upon mild heating to form two alkoxy radicals. In the second initiation step, a hydrogen atom is abstracted by the alkoxy...
